On 9 November 1980, Lionel and Marg Walsh opened the doors of Walsh Accounting with the dream of building a stronger future for their growing family. The firm has enjoyed steady growth over 36 years to achieve its goal of becoming Specialist Business and Community Accountants.  The firm has grown from a sole practitioner business to a regional firm servicing clients all over Queensland. The growth of Walsh Accounting can be attributed to one thing – quality.  Over many years we have developed our staff, systems and technology to ensure we are able to provide the same high level of service to all clients, however big or small.

Meet the Team

Lionel Walsh – Managing Partner

B Com - Accounting, Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA)

Lionel Walsh is the founding partner of Walsh Accounting. He has been a qualified accountant and registered tax agent since the firm commenced in 1980.  He became a Registered Company Auditor in 1997, and has over 25 yrs experience in local government,  company and SMSF audits.  Working predominately with small to medium businesses, Lionel has extensive exposure to rural businesses.

Lionel has progressed to Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA) status, which means he is recognised as an expert in his field. FCPAs are renowned as having gained unparalleled experience in the field of accounting and finance and the fellowship marks the strong, ongoing relationship with CPA Australia. 

Lionel loves puzzles - crosswords, riddles etc - but his favourite puzzles are finding the best solutions for his clients.  Lionel has been involved in negotiations with senior ATO Officers regarding various taxation issues including complex capital gains tax matters for both small and large businesses alike.

Lionel is a mad keen tennis player, with more than 50+ yrs experience on the tennis court.  Lionel plays weekly fixtures holding the Number 1 ranking for his team.  He is a life member of the Barcaldine Tennis Club.  Lionel is a proud and passionate family man with 7 children, 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.  Walsh Accounting really is a family business - with wife Marg, 5 children, 4 extended family members and 2 grandchildren all working for the business at one point in time.

Tony Walsh – Partner

B. Bus - Accounting, CPA, MBA, Grad Dip. Local Government Management, JP

Tony is a CPA qualified accountant, registered tax agent and Australian Financial Services Licensee. Tony has had many years' experience as a manager in State and local government before entering into public practice.  He holds a current CPA Public Practice Certificate.

Tony provides tax and business advice to emerging business clients in a diverse range of industries. 

'I find achieving great results for our clients extremely rewarding - helping them with more than just the standard services, but finding real solutions or providing new ideas.'

Tony has a particular interest and expertise in Superannuation, a field which can be quite nuanced and complex.  Having completed the necessary educational requirement to hold an ASIC limited license for Superannuation advice from July 1, 2016, Tony is able to advise clients about Superannuation and help them to meet the challenges of Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF).

'Helping clients identify and stay focused on their big picture and business goals'  is just one of the ways Tony feels he adds value to his clients.

Tony enjoys 'being part of a team that wants to provide service to the highest standard.'

Growing up in Barcaldine, Tony loved the great outdoors playing Tennis, Basketball and Cricket - now that he is a father he is sharing this passion with his four kids.  Tony is heavily involved in Junior Tennis and Junior Cricket here in Barcaldine - helping out as a coach and holding positions on the committee.  

Tony's personal contribution to the local community includes, but is not limited to Barcaldine Lawn Tennis Club Inc, Barcaldine & District Historical Association, Barcaldine Cricket Club Inc and Barcaldine Business Retention and Expansion Group Inc.  Tony was awarded Barcaldine Citizen of the Year 2017 for his service and invaluable contribution to the Barcaldine community. 

   
     
Jamie Walsh – Business Manager

Jamie 'runs a tight ship' here at Walsh Accounting as Business Manager.  He is our first port of call and provides excellent support to all of the staff here at Walsh Accounting. 

Jamie is also an invaluable resource to many of our business clients.  Jamie brings both a practical and detailed approach to taxation matters as they relate to business situations.  Jamie is able to assist you to understand and make well informed, compliant decisions when trying to achieve business efficiencies and improve business processes. Jamie is a firm believer that the financial services industry is not so much 'knowing the numbers', but rather 'knowing your clients' where relationships and understanding are extremely important.  Jamie receives his greatest reward from assisting clients achieve their best possible results from the advice that he is able to provide their unique situation and circumstances.

In Jamie's spare time (cough,cough) he helps run a Walsh family cattle property east of Barcaldine. 

   
     

Cara Burger - Accountant

B. Bus - Accounting

Cara's accounting career started at High School, where she demonstrated a natural flair for figures and bookkeeping.  After her first year of studying her Bachelor of Business, Accounting at Central Queensland University, CQU, the opportunity to work as a Trainee Accountant in Mackay became available.  An opportunity she jumped at to learn the ropes, while completing her Accounting degree by distance education.  After graduation she continued as an full time Accountant until she started her family. 

Cara moved to Barcaldine as a newly wed where her family continued to grow to include 3 children, 2 cats and 2 dogs.  While raising her young family, Cara continued to work providing bookkeeping services for a range of small businesses and volunteering with not for profit organisations.

Cara commenced working with Walsh Accounting in April 2013 and is in charge of the general accounting work for clients, excelling in assisting clients with the preparation of financial statements and tax returns. 

Cara specialises in:

  • Individual Tax returns

Cara is a very talented and creative individual - she is an amazing singer and cake decorator.  She is regularly asked to sing at local events and functions.  She also initiated and organised community workshops for singing and the dramatic arts.  Her cake decorating skills are in high demand making very elaborate cakes for weddings, birthdays etc. Cara's commitment to the Barcaldine cultural scene extends to volunteering as Treasurer of the Barcaldine Arts Council Inc. 

   
     
Neta Arnold - Compliance Officer

Neta has been a long standing and highly valued member of Walsh Accounting, being a key member of the the team since 2000.

Neta specialises in:

  • Bookkeeping
  • GST and Business Activity Statements
  • Client Reporting and profitability
  • Fuel Tax Credits

Within the Walsh Accounting team, Neta helps clients with their day-to-day bookkeeping using the BankLink program, and ensures GST-registered clients meet their taxation requirements.

Neta finds it most rewarding to help clients 'by taking the worry out of their deadlines and tax office obligations, which frees them up to concentrate on actually running their business.  I love seeing clients succeed and being appreciated by my fellow team members.'

Neta is our resident 'animal whisperer' and goat trainer.  Neta enjoys working on her own hobby farm, keeping a menagerie of different animals - cattle, sheep, goats, horses, chooks, dogs, guinea fowl and pigs.  Neta is a hobby goat trainer, with her goats being participants in the annual Tree of Knowledge Goat Race.  

Neta's personal contribution to the local community includes, but is not limited to - Barcaldine Pony Club Inc, Barcaldine Amateur Swimming Club Inc, Barcaldine Junior Rugby League Inc, Barcaldine Goat Race Committee Inc. 

   
     
Christine Waugh - Business Administrator

Prior to working at Walsh Accounting, Christine worked in the Health Industry and owned her own business.  Chrissy bought her quiet and caring nature with her to Walsh Accounting, providing invaluable support to both staff and clients alike. Chrissy wears many hats here at Walsh Accounting.

Christine specialises in:

  • Bookkeeping,
  • Payroll and Business Administration
  • Individual tax returns

So don't hesitate to call Chrissy if you have any administrative problems.

Chrissy and her husband Mike are amazing gardeners, their very green thumbs keep everyone at Walsh Accounting regularly stocked up with fresh fruit and vegetables. 

Being the first born daughter of Lionel and Marg, Chrissy has tennis in her blood.  Chrissy is a very skillful tennis player and active member of the Barcaldine Tennis Club both on and off the court. 

   
     
Natasha Walsh - Reception/Administration

Natasha is the very smiley face of Walsh Accounting.  Having grown up on a local cattle property she went on to work in a variety of industries including, agriculture, childcare, hospitality and customer service.  Natasha joined Walsh Accounting in March of 2010 as Receptionist.  Natasha is now the familiar voice on the end of the phone and being a local girl born and bred, clients feel they are in safe hands.

She now specialises in:

  • Organisation

Natasha has a black belt in organisation and a diagnosed addiction to stationary which comes in very handy here at Walsh Accounting.  Natasha has enjoyed the challenges of working in an accounting firm, gaining experience and skills which have facilitated her to expand her administrative role beyond the reception desk.

Natasha married into the Walsh family and when she is not working at Walsh Accounting she is very busy raising the next generation of Walshes. 

   
     
Kylie Angel - Administration Officer

B.Sc - Applied Psychology, Grad Cert. Human Resource Management

Kylie grew up on a cattle property north of Rockhampton.  Following graduation from the University of Southern Queensland, USQ, Kylie worked as a HR Graduate in the employment services industry in Rockhampton and then progressed further with a Specialist Recruitment Agency in Brisbane, providing recruitment services within the Government, Banking and Finance industries.  Kylie further developed her knowledge in Human Resources through her completion of a Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management from the Queensland University of Technology, QUT.

Kylie moved to Barcaldine with her husband, Tony Walsh and family in 2009 and started working with Walsh Accounting in August 2010 where she has worked with the team to implement various projects such as Family First project, development of the website and marketing duties as well as supporting the team with general administration.

Kylie specialises in:

  • Marketing and Social Media

Kylie contributes to the following community organisations - Barcaldine Arts Council and Barcaldine Art Exhibition assisting in the organisation of annual exhibitions and events.  Kylie assists Barcaldine & District Historical Association and the Barcaldine Lawn Tennis Club Inc with management of their Facebook pages.
